Syed Hamza, 16, from Istanbul, Turkey, is our January Photographer of the Month winner. He competed against three others and his photo received the most votes. Hamza previously won the Photographer of the Week during the first week of January. We love his unique and evocative work!

We interviewed Hamza to get to know him better as a photographer and to share his advice for new photographers.

The photos in this story are Hamza’s original images (© Syed Hamza).

What is the story behind the photos you’ve submitted?

Syed Hamza: Dark-haired man wearing COVID mask with baseball cap on backwards and dark daypack against gray sky.

Hamza: Well, I like bikes. I ride mostly every day, so I just took some shots of me with the bike.

Do you have a specific theme or topic that is the focus of your photography?

Hamza: My favorite type of photography is landscape with a subject in the field.

What have you gained/experienced while working with this topic?

Hamza: I have gained a lot of experience in composition.

Tell us something about yourself that most people wouldn’t notice about you.

Hamza: People tell me they like my photos, but they don’t know I do not yet consider myself a good photographer.

What’s a piece of advice you would offer to other photographers to encourage their creativity?

Hamza: Don’t be discouraged by not having a camera. You can shoot just as well or even better with a phone. Even I started my photography with my phone.

Everyone at Bokeh Focus feels that Hamza’s unique images share his sense of isolation still with us in 2021. We’re excited to share his gallery of creative work. Syed, congratulations your winning photography. We look forward to seeing more of your photography online and in gallery shows!
